What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise method designed to condition and connect body and mind, correct muscle imbalances, improve posture and tone the body. Created by German Joseph H. Pilates more than 70 years ago, Pilates is a combination of eastern and western exercise philosophies. The exercises mix fluid yet rhythmic yoga-like movements with strengthening techniques to develop lean, long, flexible muscles.

The primary focus of Pilates is to strengthen the body's core, the area between your hips and abdomen, often referred to as your "powerhouse." Why? Because, your body's center is the source of your power balance and movement.

Pilates' exercises, often referred to as the "method," are organized and practiced sequentially. Movements are practiced with control and precision, with emphasis on achieving correct form, rather than performing endless repetitions.

There are many applications and approaches to the traditional method. Applications include Matwork (specifically limited to a mat) or using a specially designed machine called a reformer or small equipment and apparatus.

The approaches vary from traditional to the more contemporary. The contemporary approach uses many modifications, choreography or arrangement of movements, assumptions about the way the body moves, instructional style and what correct alignment looks like.

Our training programs are not intended to take the place of the extensive training required to teach Pilates on its pure form, but were developed and are presented to "bridge the gap" between Fitness and Pilates, allowing the fitness professional or enthusiast to design a Pilates based program by incorporating the concepts and methods into his or her fitness classes and workouts. We hope our programs inspire you to further your education in this wonderful discipline.

Speciality Matwork Certificate Programs

The following speciality certificate programs were developed by June Kahn and are offered through SCW Fitness Education at the pre-convention events.  They are presented at the Mania Conferences or can be brought into your city and facility as well. These one day educational certification programs are a great introduction to the world of Pilates based movement. Contact June for more information.

Pilates Matwork Fundamentals Speciality Certificate

This speciality certificate is a 10-hour intensive workshop which introduces a progressive series of exercises and modifications based on the methods of Joseph Pilates. This course enhances the fundamental understanding or core strength and stabilization as it applies to movement. The exercises selected are based on principles of core stabilization, Pilates matwork, and physical therapy techniques. In addition, proper execution of form and technique will be explored as it applies to the fitness enthusiast. Matwork Fundamentals is designed for everyone: young, old, athletic, sedentary, and even those rehabilitating from injuries. A written take home exam will be given at the completion of the workshop.

Pilates Matwork Small Apparatus Speciality Certificate

This speciality certificate presents evolved Pilates mat exercises using props and small apparatus. The course takes an in-depth look at anatomy in relation to movement in the methods of Joseph Pilates and core strength and stabilization.

Class sequencing and choreographic progressions for a variety of clients and class settings are covered. Proper execution of form and technique are explored as it applies to the fitness environment. Both group and personal training techniques in teaching methods are explored. A written take home exam will be given at the completion of the workshop.

Both ACE and AFAA CEC's are available for both of these programs.

Pilates “Reformer” Equipment Based Specialty Certificate Programs

Basic Pilates “Fitness” Reformer Training/Certification  Level 1


A comprehensive  16 -20 hour training designed to introduce ,explore and practice the concepts of Pilates on the reformer suitable for group and studio environments.  
This program is ideal for small group training of 2-10 clients and is completely adaptable for one on one training.. You’ll learn to conduct  a 50 – 60 minute introductory  AND an  intermediate  routine.  Both progressions develop core control, strength, flexibility, alignment, coordination and balance. Each class includes  exercise categories that progress from lying supine to bridging, hands and knees, sitting, kneeling and standing. You will also learn the dynamics of group training as well as modifications suitable for one on one training.
This is a certificate course, with a certificate awarded at the completion of the workshop.  ACE and AFAA CEC’s available.
Pre requisites:  Foundation or completion of  Pilates Mat training or certification, (it is expected that you have a background in anatomy)  Certified group exercise instructors through ACE, AFAA, ACSM etc),  or instructor of movement arts (dance, yoga, tai chi etc.) for over one year.

Basic Pilates “Fitness” Reformer Training/Certification  Level 2

In this 16 hour Level 2 Program,  two new 50- 60 minute routines will be introduced to expand your repertoire for group teaching and one on one training at an intermediate level. This course will allow you to advance your small group training and clients with modifications and more challenging variations.  Small props will be introduced to help enhance instructional technique and muscle activation.   These new exercises focus on core control, balance and flexibility as well as extremity strength. Emphasis will be placed on set up, technique and advanced cueing skills that enhance your teaching skills and overall quality of movement.
Pre requisites:  Completion of Level 1 Basic Pilates “Fitness” Reformer Training.  Certified group exercise instructors through ACE, AFAA, ACSM etc),  or instructor of movement arts (dance, yoga, tai chi etc.) for over one year.

AeroPilates® Basic Pilates “Fitness” Reformer Training/Certification  Level 1

A comprehensive 20 hour training/certification designed to introduce ,explore and put into  practice the concepts of the Pilates training on the reformer. The reformer is the essence of corrective Pilates allowing the body to be supported where it is weak and challenged where it is strong. Our reformer training is suitable for group teaching and one on one training, for both home and  and studio environments.  
This program is ideal for small group training of 2-10 clients and is completely adaptable for one on one training.. Experience the magic of the Pilates Reformer and gain an understanding of why this apparatus is such a vital part of Pilates training.  You'll learn to conduct  a 50 – 60 minute introductory and  basic  Routine.  The Progressions develop core control, strength, flexibility, alignment, coordination and balance.
